Data are provided for Matches conducted in 2020 and early 2021 for appointments beginning July 2021. The report features five-year trend data by specialty on numbers of programs, positions, and applicants as well as match rates. The 2020 DO senior match rate (as in true match rate) for all DO seniors seeking GME is 91.7% (compared to between 88.4% and 91.6% for 2019). For reference, the US MD seniors 2020 match rate was 93.7% (compared to 93.9% in 2019). There is no range this year, because for the first time ever, the NRMP has released DO senior data.

Residency Match Statistics: Osteopathic vs. Allopathic Match Rates. Overall match rates are higher for U.S. allopathic medical school seniors and range from 92% to 95% every year. In 2019, 84.5% of osteopathic candidates matched and this was the highest match rate in history, As all AOA programs transition to a single accreditation system in 2020, we expect this match rate will continue to increase.

Their 59.5% match rate was just slightly down from 61% in 2020. The US IMG match rate was only 54.8% as recently as 2017. For Non-US FMGs, there were 7,943 participants up from 6,907 in 2020. This group saw the largest decrease in match rate with a drop of 6.3% – down to a 54.8% match rate. Growth of Specialties:
In turn, a record-high 42,508 applicants submitted rank lists, a 6% increase over 2020. Some other nuggets from this year’s Match: 92.8% of U.S. MD seniors matched to postgraduate-year one (PGY-1) positions, a drop from 93.7% in 2020. 89.1% of U.S. DO seniors matched, which fell from 90.7% in 2020.
